DS220 VM Not in Workable State

The service will not start.

The proper workaround accepted prior was to save changes to the cassandra.yaml file. This will only work if the user has permissions to save it (which it does not).


When is the VM being addressed by chance so that the service works or the proper troubleshooting changes lead to success?

Hi @dkoth_188038,

sorry to hear that you are running into this issue.

Can you try editing the cassandra.yaml with sudo:

sudo vi cassandra.yaml

This should then allow you save the changes.

For completeness I am pasting the workaround from here again:

Workaround 1

Reconfigure /etc/dse/cassandra/cassandra.yaml on your VM.

STEP 1 - Set the seeds list to use the loopback IP:

          - seeds: "127.0.0.1"

STEP 2 - Set the listen_address to localhost:

listen_address: localhost

STEP 3 - Save the changes to cassandra.yaml.

STEP 4 - Start DSE on the VM:

$ sudo service dse start

I understand that it can be frustrating when these VMs don't work out of the box, we have alerted the academy team about this issue.

But hopefully once you can save the correct configuration, it should all work well for you.

sudo vi /etc/dse/cassandra/cassandra.yaml opens up the file but is not allowing an edit.

ah, that's no good then.

For the data modelling exercises, you can do it all on Astra, this should be a lot easier. Just watch the DS220 videos, and do the notebook exercises. You should also be able to do most if not all of the DS220 exercises on Astra, no need to struggle with the VM.

Would that work for you?

And the feedback regarding the VM setup is definitely noted.

you have to change the rights on the cassandra.yaml file:

sudo chmod 777 cassandra.yaml

then, you can follow the steps and modify the cassandra.yaml file.

It works for me. hope it will for you
