It will take as long as it needs to take to index existing data.

It is almost impossible to predict how long it will take since there are a lot of moving parts involved. Some of the contributing factors are:

  • load on the cluster
  • amount of data to index
  • disk IO throughput/bandwidth
  • hardware configuration
  • access patterns
  • etc

You can make an estimate based on the progress of the indexing so far (from the nodetool compactionstats output) but that estimate will only be accurate for that point in time. Cheers!
