bin/ folder missing from DS201 Academy course VM

Hi,

As per the instruction provided in 01-install start apache cassandra, I'm performing from steps number 2 because I don't have any cloud instance, so I have skipped the step number 1. I have extracted .tar.gz file. As instructed in step 5, I don't see any bin folder inside the node folder. I see one bin folder inside node/resource/cassandra/bin. Due to this I'm unable to start cassandra as mentioned in step number 6. Could you please guide me? Am I missing anything.

Note: I have installed all the required software to perform the exercise.

Hi,

would you confirm the full name and version of the .tar.gz file that you extracted?

For any of the dse versions downloaded from the DataStax Enterprise downloads page, you should have the bin folder in the extracted archive (renamed to "node" folder as per exercise instructions). You will need the scripts in this directory to follow the exercises.

Hi,

The VM which I have installed as per the instruction is having dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz. I have extracted it and renamed to "node". Which is having only "resource" folder. I have attached the screenshot for your ref.

Hi,

I downloaded the DS201-VM and extracted the tar.gz, and I have the bin directory (plus a few more), in addition to the resources directory, so you are definitely missing directories in your listing.

I am not sure how you ended up with an incomplete extraction. Perhaps try extracting the tar once more? For verbose output use the following:

tar -xzvf dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz

Here is the checksum for the tar:

$ cksum dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz
3517560460 911703665 dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz

I'm unable to replicate the problem you have. I have a fresh copy of the VM running and here is the checksum of the tarball:

$ cksum dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz
3517560460 911703665 dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz

I've extracted its contents and here is the size of the extracted directory:

$ tar xzf dse-6.0.0-bin.tar.gz
$ du -sh dse-6.0.0
1006M    dse-6.0.0

Here are the contents of the extracted tarball including the bin/ directory:

$ ls -lh dse-6.0.0

There is a possibility that there isn't sufficient disk space available when you tried to extract the tarball in the VM. Free up at least 1,024 MB on your laptop/desktop then try to extract the tarball again. Cheers!
