DataStax Academy FAQ

DataStax Academy migrated to a new learning management system (LMS) in July 2020. We are also moving to a new Cassandra Certification process so there are changes to exam bookings, voucher system and issuing of certificates.

What are the DSE best practices for installation and EC2 configuration?

Like to setup one EC2 in AWS east and one EC2 in AWS west as 2 DC in one cluster with all options of latest DSE Enterprise. Looking for recommended version, instance type, installation best practices.

Thanks in advance.

@sushanta.saha_41353 The latest version of DataStax Enterprise is 6.8.0. You can get details of how to install and configure it from the documentation here. If this is your first time to install DSE, I recommend having a look at Planning a DSE cluster on EC2 which contains information you require for deploying a cluster on AWS.

If you don't have a preference for a Linux distribution, my personal choice is Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (any of the AMIs on AWS will do).

If you are just trying it out for development/personal purposes, you can run DSE on a 2-core EC2 instance so an m4.large would be sufficient -- but note that you will only be able to run low throughputs against these nodes (around 1-10 reads/writes per second). If you would like to work with DSE Graph or with Spark in DSE Analytics, you will need to step up to at least a 4-core instance (m4.xlarge with 16GB of RAM) but preferably an 8-core instance (m4.2xlarge with 32GB of RAM). Note that in production, we recommend m4.2xlarge as the absolute minimum for light-weight use of Cassandra-only workloads.

Let us know how you go. Cheers!

@Erick Ramirez - Which install method we should use in production environment binary tarball or Yum/apt etc ? Which is more feasible during up-gradation and have more control.
