Cassandra Medusa seems like a de-facto backup system for Cassandra, is there any need of using it even with DSE? Are DSE features doing the same as Medusa? or more?
It is not an apples-for-apples comparison so it really depends on what you're after.
OpsCenter is the default tool for managing backups of DSE clusters. But in DSE 6.8, the new server-side DSE Backup and Restore Service (BRS) was introduced.
The Backup and Restore Service provides the same ability as OpsCenter and Medusa to create both local and cloud-based stores, schedule automated backups, specify retention policies, etc. The main difference is that BRS allows you to manage backups using CQL commands.
But if you are already familiar with Medusa and use it for managing backups of your clusters, there's no reason why you couldn't use it for your DSE clusters. Similarly if you have pre-DSE 6.8 clusters that you manage with OpsCenter, you can also continue using OpsCenter. It really comes down to personal choice. Cheers!
