Can different DSE versions co-exist in the same cluster?

We are planning to upgrade our clusters from DSE 6.7 to DSE 6.8. Currently, we have two DCs with 6.7 and we are wondering will it be okay to add another DC with DSE version 6.8.

High level steps that we are planning to follow.....

1) Add a new DC-X with 6.8

2) Remove one of the old DC-A (6.7)

3) Add another new DC-Y with 6.8

4) Remove another old DC-B (6.7)

Please let us know your thoughts on what is the best way to follow to upgrade quick and safe way.

Mixed versions are only supported during upgrades. But deploying a new DC with a newer major version is not recommended and is not supported.

Adding a new DC running DSE 6.8 to an existing DSE 6.7 cluster is not supported.

The recommended upgrade path is:

  • upgrade all existing nodes to the latest DSE 6.7 (6.7.15 at the time of writing)
  • upgrade all existing nodes to the latest DSE 6.8

Cheers!
